Yellow alert warning for high temperatures and possible forest fires.

Aemet, the state meteorological agency has issued a yellow warning from Sunday across Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura as a heatwave moves in from Africa causing temperatures to rise up to 34ºc or more.

Aemet has also reported that the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies has declared an alert for the risk of forest fires in Tenerife and Gran Canaria from Sunday at 09:00 hours. This is due to extreme heat at altitude with pine forests and humidity being below 30%, making it very dry.

Therefore the following advice has been issued to citizens in order to prevent forest fires:

· Do not throw lit cigarette butts or matches, whilst walking or from a car window.

· Do not use fireworks, firecrackers or other devices which contains fire in the dangerous areas i.e. forest areas, open country, agricultural land.

· Never leave litter behind in the parks, always use the bins provided.

· In rural locations, have basic firefighting tools and some water supply ready.

Additionally, in times of high temperatures, you need to look out for your own personal health and safety as this type of heat can be a risk to your health if you do not take precautions, especially in babies, children, the elderly and chronically ill.

Moreover, in the case of taking medications, it is highly recommended that they are stored in a cool place as the heat can alter their composition and effect.

Finally, make sure that you stay well hydrated by drinking a lot of water during these times.
