80% of the population in the Canary Islands have been given the first vaccine and 65% have been given both doses.

The Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands informed this morning that the SCS medical teams have now fully immunised 65.36% of the target population and that 79.28% have now had at least one jab.

In total, the SCS had administered 2,688,657 doses of vaccines up until yesterday, (Monday 9th August), which represents 94.78% of those received, and are still encouraging anyone over 12 to come to the main mass vaccination centres without an appointment to get inoculated.

In Tenerife, the best places to go, are either the Pabellon Santiago Martin in the north every day from 9am to 7pm, or to Magma in the south between 3pm and 7pm where they only have 200 doses for this, available per day.

In Gran Canaria the Hospital Dr. Negrin has 300 doses available for those without an appointment from 11am to 7pm, Infecar has 250 from 3.30pm to 6pm, and ExpoMeloneras also has 250 from 3.30pm to 6pm. Alternitively you can book an appointment online.

The Delta variant of the coronavirus, now accounts for 86% of all cases in the Canary Islands, is far more transmissible than previous variants, and is proving to be more deadly with deaths increasing, particularly in younger people than before and those unvaccinated. This why it is important to get yours.

Vaccination update group by group:

At present, Groups from 1 to 7 are all now classed as fully vaccinated with two doses between 99.5 and 100% of the people that make up the group. These cover the more vulnerable, residents of nursing home, front line workers, teachers, police, and other essential workers, and anyone over 66 years of age.

In the rest of the age groups, the situation is as follows:

- Group 8: People between 60 and 65 years old: 81.58% with at least one dose and 56.79% with a complete regimen. This group is now catching up after the delay due to AstraZeneca tests, and the 12 weeks in between jabs.

- Group 9: People between 50 and 59 years old: 93.58% with at least one dose and 94.12% with a complete regimen. The second figure is higher because some have had the Janssen single dose vaccine.

- Group 10: People between 40 and 49 years old: 57.86% with at least one dose and 71.66% with a complete regimen. The second figure is higher because some have had the Janssen single dose vaccine.

- Group 11: People between 30 and 39 years old: 59.18% with at least one dose and 43.65% with a complete regimen.

- Group 12: People between 20 and 29 years old: 53.11% with one dose and 17.25% with a complete regimen.

- Group 13: People between 12 and 19 years old: 54.34% with a dose and 6% with a complete regimen.

The importance of vaccination:

At this time, the vaccination campaign continues and the Ministry of Health insists on the need for citizens not to miss their appointments to get vaccinated or to go to the multiple vaccination points without an appointment that there are on all the islands. They want to remind that more than 70% of those hospitalized with Covid are that are not immunized, and that 77% of ICU admissions in Canarian hospitals are unimmunized people.
