More People Vaccinated Against Covid19 Than Infected in The Canaries.

The Canary Islands have become the first community in Spain where there are more people vaccinated against Covid19 than there are infected with the virus.

We are the first autonomous community in Spain where people have received both doses of the vaccine exceeding the total number of infections in the region.

In a virtual meeting today, Friday 19th February, with the head of the Epidemiology Section of the Canary Islands Health Service, Amós García, said that the number of people fully vaccinated has passed 8,000. Which exceeds the total number of cases detected here in the Canaries.

However, García goes on to emphasise that being vaccinated against the virus only provides protection but doesn't stop the transmission of the virus. Therefore the security and sanitary measures needed to prevent the spread of the virus must remain in place "because the pandemic continues".

Although this is good news for the region, it has also been highlighted by the president of the Spanish Society of Vaccination that it will be difficult to vaccinate 70% of the over 17 population by summer. Even though the arrival of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the islands, scheduled for late March and early April, will accelerate the vaccination process, it will still be difficult.
